The Measure of a Mass

While “mass” is a central concept in gravitation, it is very difficult to define it in relativistic settings with sufficient generality. I recently discussed this alongside Bruno Arderucio Costa.

Negative masses are unstable

The typical story for why we don’t see negative masses focuses on assuming matter microscopically has positive mass, and then showing this implies the result for large masses too. As it turns out, general relativity itself abhors negative masses through the onset of instability.
